A Californian who has lived in the United States as well as Guam, Germany and Cuba, Andrew has seen a lot of the world. Although he worked in the design field and construction for 40 years, he was trained as an architect at UC Berkeley.
Andrew has been involved in artistic endeavors all his life. “I’ve been painting since I can remember, even if it was only finger painting”. Andrew has read lots of books on art and studied all of the masters. “When I first saw the Night Watch by Rembrandt, I loved its richness of color as well as the massive quality of the Unfinished Slaves by Michangelo but I was not impressed by the Mona Lisa”
Currently Andrew likes to wander around, getting ideas for his next painting. “It’s relaxing for me to watch the countryside go by, take photos and go home and paint.” The local scenes he portrays – intricate pieces of equipment and building sites – show Benicia changing over time. His paintings reflect his interest in the architectural process and abstract shapes as well as his love for natural beauty. “Watercolor is the perfect medium to demonstrate the luminosity of color.” Clean lines, simplicity of shape and intensity of color are all evident in Andrew’s work Like some of the famous artists that influenced his work – Steve Quiller and Dale Laitinen, Andrew believes that one’s imagination should fill in the details. Local color is not as important as the mood that color depicts.
